Nocturne

October 27 - November 20, 2022

Artlink Contemporary Gallery is pleased to present Nocturne, a group exhibition juried by professional artist and educator, John Hrehov that includes 50 artists from around the United States, all working within the theme of Nocturne (nighttime).

Juror Statement

It has been an honor and challenge to select the works on display in this exhibition. One hundred eighty-six (186) artists entered 334 pieces. After several rounds of viewing the works, I narrowed down the selections for entry. I finally decided on 66 artworks by 52 artists for the show. My criteria were based on formal issues: color, line, space, etc. Also, on how the subject of the night was interpreted. I tend to favor works that are personal in nature – more idiosyncratic. When dealing with an issue like the nighttime, it’s easy to fall into clichés, so I was less receptive to works that seemed too obvious or based solely on formula. When dealing with the nocturnal subject, as I have in my career for over thirty years, I still want to experience the mood of the pieces. Seeing that the subject is one to inspire mystery, melancholy, fear, isolation, quiet, solitude, and such, it’s inherently rich for an emotional response. The works on display touched me in their poetry of the subject. I hope the exhibition’s viewers will feel the same way I did when selecting the results. - John Hrehov
